Email FAQ

As an IUSM student, what are my email options?

An @iupui.edu email address directed to Exchange email without forwarding is required. If you already have another email address in the IU system, such as xyz@indiana.edu, you may keep it in addition to your new @iupui.edu / Exchange email.

WARNING: Email sent from one Exchange account to another within the IU system will not be forwarded elsewhere, no matter how your forwarding options are set. Your class listserv email will remain on Exchange. It will not be forwarded to umail, imail, or elsewhere. If you have Exchange email, you must be sure to check it.

Are there any advantages to using Exchange?

Yes, there are several advantages:

  • Exchange offers greater security than any of the other options. Because students in any of the health professions come into contact with patient information, this enhanced security is essential.
  • Exchange users are allotted 500 M of storage. Webmail users are allotted only 100 M.
  • Exchange has many additional, easy-to-use features.
  • Personal calendars and shared calendars are a valuable tool.
  • Wireless PDA access to Exchange is a great convenience. (You will need a PDA for your third year clinical rotations.)
  • (Exchange is required for class of 2012 and beyond.)

Is it ok to forward my Exchange email to another host, such as Gmail or Hotmail?

No. Using Exchange is mandated because of its enhanced security. Also, if you have Exchange but don’t read it, you will miss official emails from IUSM. Email sent from one Exchange account to another within the IU system will not be forwarded elsewhere, no matter how your forwarding options are set.

Why am I required to use Exchange email instead of Umail, Imail, or webmail?

Using Exchange is mandated because its enhanced security helps to safeguard patient privacy.
