Program Overview:

The IU School of Medicine and IU Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI have teamed up to develop an innovative coordinated MD-MPH curriculum that integrates medicine and public health training. Students learn key public health topics, including issues related to environmental health, infectious disease control, biostatistics, disease prevention and health promotion, injury control, epidemiological studies, and health policy.  Public health training in the MD-MPH begins with the following five core courses, which are typically completed online during the summer after the first year of medical school.

  • PBHL S500
  • PBHL H501
  • PBHL E517
  • PBHL A519
  • PBHL B551

These same five core courses can be completed as a Graduate Certificate in Public Health for students who seek exposure to the foundations of public health, but are not certain they want to pursue the full MPH degree. The core courses are typically completed online during the summer after the first year of medical school, however, they can be taken at other times as well. Competitive Scholarships are available to cover in-state tuition for the five core courses (approximately $7,000 per medical student) in the 2017 summer, regardless of whether you apply the credits toward a certificate or an MPH.

After completion of the five core courses, the remaining MPH courses are usually completed during a “gap” year in medical school, however, other arrangements can be made. To make it possible to complete two degrees in five years instead of six, some of the MPH and MD credits are shared.
