6.3 Self-Directed and Life-Long Learning

Scope

All IUSM students, faculty, and staff.

Policy Statement

Self-directed learning must occur in phase 1 courses of the medical curriculum, as directed by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee.

Reason for Policy

To help medical students develop skills of lifelong learning.

Approval

Approved by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee 12/20/2016.

Procedures

All phase 1 courses must have at least one self-directed learning experience (see definition below). Self-directed learning exercises are included in the annual course report for tracking and evaluation of needed course/faculty development.

Definitions

Self-directed learning experience consists of four sequential elements in which students:

  1. Identify, analyze, and synthesize information relevant to their learning needs.
  2. Assess the credibility of information sources.
  3. Share the information with their peers and supervisors.
  4. Receive feedback on their information-seeking skills.

Sanctions

Specific factors or limited issues not in compliance require a formal report from the representative course/clerkship directors to the Curriculum Council Steering Committee outlining an exact process/plan to achieve compliance.
