3.1 Resident Participation in Medical Student Education


Scope

All IUSM students, residents, and faculty.


Policy Statement

All medical students at IUSM, during their clinical training, must receive at least eight weeks of significant exposure to residents, as dictated by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee. At least four weeks of resident contact will occur over the course of all required clinical clerkship rotations; the remaining four weeks of contact may occur with either residents or fellows and may take place during a required clerkship, a subinternship or an elective. Four weeks of resident contact will be experienced on a required clerkship and four additional weeks will occur on either a required clerkship, a subinternship, or an elective.


Reason for Policy

This policy is to ensure that all medical students at IUSM receive at least eight weeks of significant exposure to residents during their clinical training, as dictated by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee.

Approved by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee 1/11/2017.


Procedures

The four weeks of required clerkship will be with residents; the four additional weeks may be with either residents or fellows.

Tracking will occur as part of the curriculum management program.


Sanctions

Failure to meet these requirements will put a student in conflict with the academic requirement for graduation.
