Scope

All students enrolled in an IUSM-approved educational experience.

Policy Statement

All students must be enrolled in IUSM-approved educational experience to receive malpractice coverage.

Reason for Policy

Professional Liability Insurance for IUSM students is provided through the Old Crescent Insurance Co., a single-parent captive insurance company of Indiana University. Students in school-approved electives at out-of-state institutions have coverage of $1 million per incident and $3 million aggregate, unless coverage is provided by the out-of-state institution through an affiliation agreement.

IUSM’s malpractice insurance coverage is limited to registered students enrolled in approved clinical coursework required for degree completion. Guest students from other medical schools pursuing one or more clinical rotations at Indiana University cannot be covered under IU’s malpractice insurance and must carry appropriate malpractice coverage through their home institution or through their own purchase.

Approval

Approved by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee 11/16/2016.

Procedures

Unless otherwise provided by a host institution pursuant to a written agreement, all students are covered under the Old Crescent Insurance Co. medical professional insurance when working within the course and scope of an IUSM-approved plan of study, whether it is onsite or offsite at an affiliated hospital. Liability insurance provided to students is intended to cover only formal experiential training activities that are part of the curriculum and that are organized and conducted under the supervision of the school.

A statement of coverage can be requested for any non-IU facility in which an eligible student is participating in a clinical program by contacting the Office of the Registrar.

Sanctions

Educational experiences that do not contribute toward the plan of study are not covered by the institution’s liability and malpractice insurance.
