Scope

This policy applies to students who request additional time to complete graduation requirements.

Policy Statement

Students who require additional time to complete degree requirements as specified in the Academic Requirements Policy must submit a written request to the IUSM Office of Medical Student Education and be approved for an extension of their academic plan of study. Students must complete all components of the agreements as outlined in the extended plan of study.

Reason for Policy

Because of academic or personal difficulties, some students may require additional time to complete degree requirements.

Approval

Approved by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee 04/10/2017.

Procedures

Students who determine that they need additional time to meet degree requirements must first contact their lead advisor. The lead advisor, the assistant deans for academic advising and career mentoring and the student will meet to create an agreement for an extended plan of study. This agreement seeks to ensure that the student meets all degree requirements in a timely manner and has a post-graduation plan. This agreement will list all requirements, expectations for enrollment and additional items the student must complete. The agreement also includes timing for each requirement. Because of enrollment requirements for financial aid and malpractice insurance, the plan may include enrollment for electives beyond what the student needs to meet graduation requirements. This agreement must be signed by the student, his/her lead advisor and the assistant deans for academic advising and career mentoring and approved by the senior associate dean for medical student education or his/her designee.

Sanctions

Students who do not complete the requirements of the agreement for an extended plan of study will be required to meet with the Student Promotions Committee for failure to show satisfactory academic progress. Consequences may include recommendation for dismissal.
