Credit and Contact Hours

Medical students at Indiana University receive an equivalent medical education independent of the campus they attend. In support of this standard, each course taught statewide carries the same number of credits, in compliance with the Course Equivalency Guidelines set forth by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee. This ensures greater consistency and fairness in calculations of student GPA, an important consideration for scholarships, AOA, and other student awards.

The ratio of credit hour to contact hours is the same irrespective of learning session type (e.g., lecture lab, small group activity). Online distance learning activities count for contact time only if a structured educational experience occurs between learner and instructor (ex., online discussion group). For the legacy curriculum, 1 credit hour = 16.5 contact hours; for Phase 1 of the new curriculum, 1 credit hour = 20 contact hours. For details, please see the following links:
